This creation of Tage Lundell in Sweden is a relatively new introduction (1970) whose merits were recognized early by the Royal Horticultural Society who bestowed on it their prestigious Award of Garden Merit. ‘Helsingborg’s 2"+ dark purple nodding flowers are single and open to display slightly paler purple petaloid stamens. The light green, handsome foliage is the perfect foil for the dark flowers. This is an easy, robust grower, bearing a heavy crop of flowers in early spring and a splash in mid-summer, followed by long-lasting and beautiful silvery seedheads. Ultimate height is about 6-8’, and its habit is chunky. It makes an excellent container plant (we have ours in a large Italian terracotta pot which it seems to enjoy) and is extremely hardy (zone 4 at least). Like all the alpinas, ‘Helsingborg’ demands perfect winter drainage, and in northern climes an eastern or northern exposure is advisable (please refer to our general notes on alpinas in our catalogue). This is a great plant for a good spring show.
