Kiri Te Kanawa 8005   Large Flowering   We have waited a long time for this incredible plant, hybridized by that extraordinary British plantsman double Barry Fretwell and named after the New Zealand opera singer. The deep rich blue colour alone makes it outstanding, but in addition it is unique in that the flowers on both old and new wood are always double. Early blooms are about 6" in diameter and become slightly smaller and lighter in colour as the season progresses, as do many plants. Flowers are beautifully formed, with many layers of broad, overlapping, pointed sepals and contrasting creamy yellow stamens. I’ve never been a fan of double flowers in general but this is an exception--it is truly an aristocrat & unlike any other.
